Dolce: The Second Layer
The second layer is complete. This layer uses a slightly expanded palette of colors and opaque paint. Using a larger brush helps to keep the brushwork active. I was very conscious of the amount of contrast of the lights and darks in the portrait. I use a black mirror to check the contrast during the painting process. During this stage of the painting I will often lose some of the likeness and some of the child’s unique expression. I am okay when this occurs, as I know I can find it at a later stage during the painting process. At this point I am focused on structure of the head and features. I am also not as concerned about color nuance as again I will find that in later stages of the painting.
